This image features Marine Corporal (Retired) Juan Dominguez. Juan served with 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines (3/5), an infantry battalion deployed to Sangin, Afghanistan. The battalion is nicknamed "Darkhorse."

Juan was severely injured after stepping on an IED (improvised explosive device) on October 23, 2010, resulting in a loss of both legs above the knee and his right arm. Juan has overcome both physical and mental challenges and refuses to let his injuries define him as a person.

Juan does not identify himself as a hero. Instead, he says his heroes are the fallen...those that gave their last breath for this country.

Juan's statement for this art series was, "I am beautiful because I am unique. I accept everyone who has a compass that steers true north and has the compassion to accept the different."
